DANCE FOR ACTORS

Two people smiling and holding hands in a bubble-filled outdoor setting at night with string lights overhead.

Choreographing for TV and film is exciting, but the reality is that much of the work involves simple movement or short scenes with just a touch of dance. Early in my career, Harbour Dance gave me the opportunity to teach beginner adult classes, where I discovered a particular talent for working with actors who had little to no dance experience.

I quickly realized that stepping into a dance scene can be intimidating, and self-confidence is often low. With this in mind, I focus on patience, clear guidance, and easy-to-follow directions, helping each performer discover what works for them and building the confidence they need to shine on screen.

You’d probably laugh at my résumé if I told you the types of “moves” I’ve choreographed for movie and TV scenes. I’m trained in jazz, ballet, contemporary, tap, hip hop, and musical theatre—but to give you a sense of what I’m talking about, here’s a sampling of genres that have made me chuckle:
